”The Ocean Ltd”.
Valtameri Ltd was founded in 1928 by Mr. Juho Kuosmanen to continue business of Suomen Waltamerentakainen Kauppa. That one was sailing between Finland and South-America on trading purposes, but just failed.
Valtameri focused in importing raw material and equipment needed by the Finnish industry. Because of the arbitrary and huge war reparations, which Finland had to pay to the Soviet Union after the WWII, it was needed much raw material in Finland. That gave job also for Valtameri, and it focused into importing and wholesale of steel products.
However, the recession in the early 1990’s hurt the steel business seriously. As a result of negotiations, three largest steel wholesalers in Finland decided to merge. In 1993 Valtameri, Aspo and Rautaruukki transferred their steel wholesale operations into united company, which was called Asva Oy. Later, in 1999, the shell of Valtameri was merged into Rautaruukki Ltd.
The share of Valtameri was listed in the Helsinki Stock Exchange from 1981 to 1999.
