“Wasa Cotton mill Ltd”, known formerly as Wasa Bomulls-manufaktur AB, later Vaasan Puuvilla Oy / Wasa Bomull Ab.

Vaasan Puuvilla was established in 1857 by Mr. August Alexander Levón in Vaasa on the west coast of Finland. The own spinning mill was built in 1859 and the weaving mill in 1868. During the 1890’s the factory had over 1 000 employees when the whole population of Vaasa was around 10 000 – 13 000 persons. The WW I made the company flourishing while the competition from abroad was minimal and the army of Russia ordered a lot.

The WW II was difficult while raw materials were hard to get. In the year 1900 the company decided to concentrate in threads for stitching and their articles became the most profitable area of the company. The company had also exclusive right for manufactory of corduroy until 1917.

The Finnish cotton industry drifted into severe problems in the 1960’s due to international competition and rise of the domestic costs. Vaasan Puuvilla merged with Finlayson in 1964 and the production in Vaasa was closed. Nowadays the old factory buildings are used as offices.

The share of Vaasan Puuvilla was listed in the Helsinki Stock Exchange from 1915 to 1931 and again from 1942 until 1963.
