A quarrying company Granit was established in 1886 by Mr. Anton von Alfthan. The company dug street stones and building stone for many important buildings in Finland. The main railway station and the Bourse house in Helsinki are constructed from stone of Granit. Gravestones and some statues were done, too – like the monument of Alexander II of Russia staying in Helsinki. Stone was also exported abroad, for example in Russia.
The company was active between 1886 and 1965, when it was sold to Swedish owners. Granit held also ships, and its vessels were at least Granit, Gustaf, Mathilda, Bergö and Urda.
Nature of business: Quarry, mining, stone.
The fantastic jugend style vignette of the Granit’s certificates was drawn in 1886 by Mr. Alex Federley. The illustration was used the whole operating history of Granit. The signature ”AF-ey” can be seen in the lower right corner of the certificate.
