One of the most difficult domestic problem in the 19th century Finland was so called feudal tenure in a part of the country i.e in the ”Old Finland”. Finland was for centuries part of Sweden where feudal tenure didn’t exsist, but Sweden had lost parts of Finland to Russia in years 1721 and 1743. The emperor of Russia had donated these war triumphs to the nobility for their services to the emperor. The feudal tenure was extreamly strong in Russia and totally unkown in Finland. The entire Finland became part of Russia in 1809, but the feudal tenure existed only on those areas which had become part of Russia in 1721 and 1749.
The feudal tenure problem was solved during 1870s and 1880s when the The Grand Duchy of Finland helped the farmers to buy their farms from their lords with these loan papers which the Grand Duchy issued, but the farmers paid. The biggest owners of these lands were Musin-Puskin, Kuscheleff-Besborodko and Freedricksz families.
