Kaukas was established in 1873 in purpose of manufacture spools for thread. They produced also woodchips. The limited liability form was chosen in 1903, when the company started to plan a pulp factory in Lappeenranta. In addition to that, the company expanded to sawn products, plywood and paper. The spools were manufactured until 1972. In 1986 Kaukas was merged into Kymmene-Strömberg Ltd and is so nowadays a part of UPM Ltd. The factory area in Lappeenranta is still in production.
The share of Kaukas was listed in the Helsinki Stock Exchange from 1943 to 1986. Shares of UPM Ltd are still listed.
