Toppila Ltd was founded in 1927 to build a sulphate cellulose factory in Oulu. The initiator of the project was family Dixon, who needed sulphate cellulose to Peter Dixon & Son Ltd’s two paper mills in England. The Toppila factory was designed by Mr. Alvar Aalto and the production started in 1931. During the WW II the production was aborted, but after the war the production portfolio was broadened. The cellulose was exported to Grimsby and Oughtibridge paper mills in England all the way until the 1970s.
The Dixon family sold the Toppila to the company Kajaani Oy in 1973, and the factory was closed in 1985. Nowadays the factory area has been transformed to a housing area.
Nature of business: Forest industry, pulp.
